Violet started the map at Tin Gate Mire. It was a place that she had made a sketch of. It was in the second book. It was a flat piece of waterlogged land in the trough of a shallow valley. There was only one safe path through the mire. Few went by that way. There were tall reeds and biting flies and stagnant pools of peat-brown water that were deeper than they seemed. It was easier to make the journey around than through. It took twice as long. That was the price that most agreed to pay.

The mire was 12 miles from Black Lake. Black Lake was to the west. Violet put the mire directly above the fireplace. It was as good a place to start as any. She kept it small and marked in the direction followed by the valley in thin lines of paint. The paint was dark brown. Owen had found it for her. He found brushes too that he had extended so that she did not have to reach up too far.

Violet was wearing her least favourite dress. It was hard to choose. She had no dress she truly liked. They were all old and chosen for her by her mother. She did not care if any of them became covered in paint.

Violet decided that the size of her hand would account for a mile. There was no point finding a more accurate ruler. She would always have her hands with her. They would suffice. She measured twelve hands to her left and marked a place for Black Lake. She remembered the shape of the water from her description in the first chapter of the book. She painted it in with deft strokes. The long-handled paintbrushes were lighter and easier to use than they appeared.

The woodland and fields that surrounded the lake she knew well. Arthur Galbraith had sat and admired the view for some time before setting off towards Tin Gate Head and the valley beyond.

The dog watched Violet from the doorway. It was raining outside.
